The NMRA's Turntable is a monthly publication which, like a railroad turntable, will lead you in several directions on the internet.

This e-publication is a collection of railroad and model railroad videos, podcasts, websites, and/or other information freely available on the internet that we think may be of interest to you. The NMRA claims no ownership of this information, nor do we endorse its creators or their websites. The NMRA Turntable will not promote individuals or their for-profit ventures.
This video is a 21-minute slideshow summarizing the construction of Carl Brainerd's Clear Lake Timber Company model railroad over a 5-year period. The railroad is a 9' x 9' L-shaped HO scale standard gauge layout designed to fit in a spare bedroom. It is a point-to-point logging-theme design with switchbacks. The construction photos touch on benchwork, backdrops, lighting, roadbed, track-laying, wiring, land-form construction, scenery application, tree-making, and structures.
It can be disappointing to install an expensive sound decoder in your favorite loco and still not have it sound just right. And part of getting it right is selecting the right speaker for the installation. In this video Larry Puckett goes over a range of decoders suitable for installations in locos of most popular scales and he gives you some tips on ways to get the best sound out of them.
Steve's Trains shows the start-to-finish construction of this great little 17x30 inch N scale model railroad that is small enough to fit on almost any table or even a desk.
The Claremont Docks Railroad is Howard Lloyd's rendition of a 1940s railroad terminal in the New York Harbor area. This is a stunning HO Scale layout with a strong maritime element. The confluence of maritime and railroad modes of transportation are shown off in this one, and doing it in the broader context of the New York Harbor region in the 1940s really works.
If you want to build dioramas and model scenery this is where to start. Scene-A-Rama has a range of starter kits that will get you started in building awesome dioramas that are perfect for school projects or even as a test bed for trying new techniques that can later be applied to a large model railroad.

Luke Towan shows how to create the dam wall shown in the video. A Scene-A-Rama Water Diorama kit was used, however, it was supplemented with a range of products from Woodland Scenics to create the final project.
The next in-person NMRA annual convention will be held during the week of August 7-13, 2022. The event is being held at the St Louis, Marriott Grand Hotel. Registrants will receive one free self-driving tour.
This is a collection of video clinics that were broadcast in place of several in-person NMRA Division, Region, or National conventions that couldn't be attended due to the Covid19 pandemic. Some of these videos had been pre-recorded while others had been done live during each several-hours-long online broadcast appearing on both Facebook and YouTube. This was done as a way to continue to communicate with our members while the pandemic still prevented us from holding face-to-face meetings!

Those involved in putting this collection together were truly a worldwide group of NMRA members from the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and the USA acting in coordination to bring us this collection of video presentations. While quality is not always guaranteed in some of these presentations, please remember that the volunteers who have organized these video events, and the members who made the videos that had appeared within them, are not paid professional videographers!
We take a look at the new NMRA exhibit showcasing the history of scale model railroading located at the California State Railroad Museum. The exhibit is presented in partnership with the National Model Railroad Association.
James reviews the Broadway Limited Paragon 4 locomotive, EMD GP20 with DCC Sound, and BLI's new decoder. The two road names reviewed here are Union Pacific and Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe.
In this video Ron's Trains & Things takes you to three awesome Colorado railroad destinations. He gives you a tour of the Colorado Model Railroad Museum in Greely, the Georgetown Loop Railroad in Georgetown, and the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden. These are all fantastic destinations for the whole family.
In this video Dubai Trains shows the steps to install DCC with sound into a GE 44 Ton switcher. It took him 4 months, 3 engines and 2 decoders to arrive at 1 happy camper. There is an explanation of what stall current is, why we isolate the motor and lights, and the easiest way to end up with a GE 44 Tonner with Tsunami2 + sound.
In early July 2014, hearing about the imminent demise of the classic C&O signals along CSX's New River Sub in West Virginia, Jacob Kempf ventured south from Harrisburg, PA, to Hinton, WV and the surrounding area, focusing on the segment of track between Hinton and Thurmond. The trip served its purpose, as he was able to capture many classic C&O signals.

Traffic was very light throughout the trip, especially on the first full day, with only a handful of trains passing during the day. Coal trains are a plenty, as were the occasional unit grain and oil train. Amtrak's Cardinal makes a few appearances as well. Some older power is seen, which can't be seen anymore, making this a true flashback video! Notable locations include Hinton, Meadow Creek, Quinnimont, Prince and Thurmond.
From New Orleans to New York, a train ride aboard the "Crescent" takes you on an extraordinary journey through American history.

This train journey begins in the "cradle of jazz" - New Orleans. Three famous express trains start and terminate here: the City of New Orleans, the Sunset Limited and the Crescent. Every morning at 7 a.m. the Crescent sets off from New Orleans on its 1,377-mile journey from the Deep South to pulsating New York City.

The distance is covered in around 31 hours. The route takes in various famous cities on the journey northeast. The train then heads to Atlanta, the largest city in Georgia. Charlotte in North Carolina was named nearly 250 years ago after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the German wife of Britain’s King George III. Our next stop is Washington D.C., capital of the United States since 1800. Beforehand that honor had gone to a city further north: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed in 1776. The final stop on this unique train journey is New York City aka the "Big Apple". This video was created by DW Documentary, a German public broadcast service.

The NMRA Partnership Program is a member benefit that truly has a tangible payback. We've partnered with model railroad manufacturers of all sizes, giving them exposure on our website in return for receiving generous discounts for NMRA members all year long. Some provide members with special codes, others prefer a phone or email order, but all appreciate the additional business from our members. And of course, our members appreciate the extra savings...savings that can actually pay the cost of NMRA membership! Be sure to check back often as new Partners are being added all the time.
The Division Business Car column appears in even-numbered months in NMRA Magazine.
